Building a Pond

  • The first thing you need to consider, is the placement of your pond.  An ideal situation for most frogs and the cleanliness of your pond is to have the pond in ¾ shade.  Also, do not put your pond under Oleanders, Pine Trees or other poisonous trees.  Fallen needles and/or leaves can be hazardous to your tadpoles health.

  • It's a good idea to build your pond in an area that is already surrounded by foliage so that when your tadpoles become froglets, they can leave your pond straight for the safety of the cover of the plants.

  • Make sure your pond's walls are not so steep that the frogs cannot climb out after they have matured from tadpoles.  It is a good idea to place objects in the waters edge for the frogs to climb out on.  e.g. Sticks, logs etc...

  • When you make a pond, try and create overhanging areas that provide shade and protection from predators.  Use something such as a rock or log.  Try building a bridge!

  • Your pond should also be in a part of your garden that has a moist or wet area, so the frogs have somewhere to cool off now that they are not in your pond.  Most frogs won't go back to the pond until they mate.
